Phuket Airport customs: green or red channel

Choose the correct channel after baggage claim and verify allowances with Thai Customs before travel.

Short answer

After collecting baggage on an international arrival, use the green channel only when you have nothing to declare. Use the red channel for taxable, restricted, commercial or excess goods—or when you are unsure. Thai Customs currently publishes allowances of no more than 200 cigarettes or 250 g of tobacco and no more than 1 litre of alcohol.

Key facts

Green channel
Nothing taxable, prohibited or restricted to declare
Red channel
Goods to declare or questions for an officer
Tobacco
Up to 200 cigarettes or 250 g under published allowance
Alcohol
Up to 1 litre under published allowance

Decide after baggage claim

International passengers reach customs after passport control and baggage reclaim. Review everything carried by the group, including duty-free purchases, gifts and goods packed by another person.

The green channel is a declaration that you meet the applicable conditions. When a quantity or item is uncertain, use the red channel and ask before proceeding.

Published personal allowances

Thai Customs currently lists personal belongings in reasonable quantity up to a total value of THB 20,000 when they are not prohibited, restricted, food or commercial goods. It separately lists tobacco and alcohol limits.

Allowances and restricted-item rules can change. The linked Customs page, not a copied social-media graphic, should be checked near the travel date.

Restricted or controlled goods

Medicines, food supplements, plants, animals, drones, communications equipment and other controlled items may require a permit even when their value is low. Prohibited goods are not made acceptable by declaring them.

Carry prescriptions, permits, invoices or receipts when relevant. If a traveller is carrying an item for another person, they remain responsible for what is in their baggage.

Cash declarations

Currency declaration thresholds are separate from duty-free goods. Thai Customs currently publishes declaration requirements for foreign currency above USD 15,000 or equivalent and for specified Thai-currency amounts.

Check the current Customs currency guidance for the direction of travel and destination; do not rely on the goods allowance to answer a currency question.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use red channel when unsure?

Yes. Ask a customs officer before leaving the controlled area when you are uncertain about an item or quantity.

Are duty-free purchases automatically exempt?

No. Duty-free purchases still count toward the applicable import allowance at the destination.

Can a group combine cigarette allowances?

Do not assume allowances can be pooled. Check the current individual allowance and ask Customs when quantities are carried together.
